The Roman Road & The Five Solas

Roman Road To Salvation 1. What does the Bible tell us about God ? Romans 1:20  For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 2. What does the Bible tell us about Man ?  Romans 3:23   For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 3. What is God's plan ?  Romans 5:8   But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 4. What is the gift of Jesus ?  Romans 6:23   For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in  Christ Jesus our Lord.  5. What hope does Jesus bring us?  Romans 8:1   Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus  6. What do we need to do to be saved ?  Romans 10:9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart tha...

Feburary 11, 2024 What Does It Mean To Follow Jesus?

Watch this video Discussion 1. In your own words, write a sentence to describe what it means to follow Jesus. 2.  As J.D. noted, “To follow Jesus means that you assume the identities of worshiper, family member, servant, steward, and witness. This is what it means to . . . look like him, think like him, and live like him.”  Which of these five identities comes most naturally to you?  Which of them do you find most difficult?  What could you do to grow in each of these identities? 3. J.D. closed this series by reminding us that the local church is the context where growing as a disciple of Jesus works best and where “life-on-life transformation happens.” His encouragement was to be increasingly involved in a local, Bible-teaching church—not a spectator, but someone deeply enmeshed in the life of the church.  What’s the next step you could take to deepen your involvement in the local church?

January 21, 2025 What Happened on Easter

Watch this video 5 of 6: What Happened on Easter Reflect & Discuss 1. Quoting pastor and theologian Tim Keller, J.D. said, “In light of the resurrection, we should be willing to doubt our doubts”—or trust God more than our doubts. They “are not the definitive argument against God” as we may think they are.  Have you ever experienced doubts about God or his goodness? If so, what were they? What could it look like for you to doubt your doubts? 2. Since Jesus is alive, our doubts don’t have to rattle us—we can trust that he has satisfying answers to our questions, even if we don’t know the answers yet. Read Romans 11:33–36. Paul shows us in this passage how to respond to the things we can’t yet understand about God.  How would you describe Paul’s attitude in this passage? What could it mean for you to accept the things you don’t understand based on the idea that Jesus is alive? 3. Not only is our suffering temporary, but God is at work in it. Read 2 Corinthians 4:17-18...

January 14, 2025 Who Does Jesus Hang Out With, and Why?

Watch this video: Who Does Jesus Hang Out With, and Why? Discussion Read John 1:14.  What’s your reaction to Jesus being full of grace and truth? In what ways does it comfort you that Jesus is full of both grace and truth? For what reasons? Read John 4:1-26. In their interaction, Jesus pointed out the woman’s relationship woes, which may seem insensitive or harsh to us. So, J.D. asked: “Why would Jesus expose her like this?” He answered that to heal her wounds, Jesus had to reveal them first. In light of JD's answer, comment on these three scenarios:     1. Fully known but not fully loved     2. Fully loved but not fully known     3. Fully loved and fully known

Christmas at Riverwalk December 17, 2024

Merry Christmas! This is a picture from the San Antonio Riverwalk, a beautiful scene during Christmas. The Bible uses river, spring, and living water to illustrate the beautiful life that can be attained from the Lord.  We will read four passages today and discuss: 1) When have you felt like stale water? 2) What happens when the river flows into the Dead Sea according to Ezekiel 47:8-9? 3) How is the river's water quality? What evidence do you see from Ezekiel 47:6-12?  4) Do you want the river to flow into your life? How can it be done? (Revelations 7:17, John 4:15) 5) Why do you think we are only sometimes like a watered garden in Isaiah 58:11? (Ezekiel 47:12) 6) How would you pray based on these Scriptures?  Ezekiel 47:6-12 6  He asked me, “Son of man, do you see this?”  Then he led me back to the bank of the river.   7  When I arrived there, I saw a great number of trees on each side of the river.   8  He said to me, “This water fl...

January 7, 2024 What Did Jesus Say and Do?

Ice-breaker... Pick one of the following "2024 Year In Review" questions to ponder and share with the group on Tuesday: Today's Lesson: Watch Video 3  What Did Jesus Say and Do? Answer the following questions: 1) J.D. mentioned that sin distorts our view of God. But as a teacher, Jesus teaches us the truth about God.  Share an important truth about God that shaped your life today. 2) Jesus’s second role was as a miracle worker. What are the major differences between seeing Jesus’s miracles as raw displays of power versus redemptive displays of power? 3) The last of Jesus’s roles is that he was a deliverer, delivering us from evil demonic influences. Read Luke 4:31–37.  What do you notice about Jesus’s power over the demons in this story and how might that relate to you? Concluding question: What do you need the most? Jesus as a teacher, miracle worker or deliverer?

Nov 26, 2024 Why Did Jesus Come?

Watch Session 2's Video:  Why Did Jesus Come? Review last Session In our last session, we explored the question, “Who is Jesus?” We touched on the reality that Jesus is the “God-man”—he is fully God and fully human. Since Jesus is fully human, he understands us. He’s shared in our pain, weakness, and limitations and sympathizes with us.  Because Jesus is God the Son, he can—and has—overcome the weaknesses that he willingly took upon himself by becoming a human. Jesus has redeemed us, and he has the power to deliver us from temptation.   Discussion Why did Jesus come?  Jesus came to announce and accomplish the gospel, which is the good news that through his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus rescues us, reigns as king, and leads us into the eternal life we were created to enjoy. 1. While other religions are spelled “DO," that is obey and be accepted by God, Christianity is spelled “DONE,” which is the other way around. How does this help you understand the gr...
