November 22, 2022 The Character of God - Faithfulness

  This week's YouTube video from The Bible Project is  The Character of God - Faithfulness . The word emet is a common word used to describe God in the Hebrew Bible. It is related to the Hebrew word Amen, which means that's truth.  Emet has to do with stability or reliability.  It can be translated as “faithfulness” or “truth.” So when the authors say that God is “full of emet,” they are saying that he is trustworthy—we can trust him. But trust isn’t always an easy thing.  For example, God promised the Israelites that he would give them a king of peace that would rule forever and ever. But Israel’s kingdom collapsed, and they found themselves without a home or a king. They wondered if God was truly faithful to his promises and cried out to him, “Where is your loyal love that you swore to David in your emet?” (Psalm 89:49).   Today's YouTube video from the Bible Project:  Character of God: Loyal Love   The Hebrew word khesed is one of the most common descriptions of God in the Hebrew Bible, and it’s almost impossible to translate into any other language! This word is rich with meaning, combining the ideas of unconditional love , loyalty , and generosity .  Pause to think about these three dimensions for a second. Ruth, for example, showed khesed to her mother-in-law Naomi by binding herself to Naomi despite the cost it could have on her future. It was a beautiful act of loyalty that revealed Ruth’s generous and faithful character. Many people attempt to show this kind of loyalty, but we often fail to endure in our love for other people. But God’s love never fails.  God demonstrated his loyal love to us by becoming human and binding himself to us in the person of Jesus—the ultimate loyal and loving human.
