What might it look like for you to take a moment of blessing from God and turn it into momentum that, going forward, will bless others as well?
This week's video: How Do You Build A Legacy by Mark Zschech
Genesis 12:1-3 details God’s remarkable charge to Abraham to set in motion a legacy that would change the world forever. Mark highlights five ideas from this passage, to galvanise us to leave legacies of our own.
Firstly, the King and His Kingdom must be first in our lives. Abraham was challenged to forsake the many false gods he and his family were worshiping. Similarly, we can forget about leaving a legacy if we’re putting anyone or anything other than Jesus on the throne of our lives (Matthew 6:33). What competes for first place in your life? Your family? Your career? Your bank account? Your comfort? Netflix? Your busyness? What practical step could you take this week to forsake that idol or distraction, and focus on God?
Secondly, a journey of obedience requires steps of faith. In Genesis 12:1, God tells Abraham to leave the known and travel to the unknown. As you think and pray about leaving a legacy, how is God prompting you to leave comfort and choose discomfort? What unknowns are you facing that freak you out?
Thirdly, God’s blessing always begins with you but is never meant to end with you. Genesis 12:2 tells us Abraham was blessed to be a blessing to thousands coming after him. In the same way, we’re stewards of God’s blessings, not owners. His resources are entrusted to us, to be passed on. Think about the ‘holders’ and the ‘givers’ you know. Which ones are happier? If you come from a family of givers, congratulations! Please share an example. If you come from a family of holders, how can you break that tradition or trajectory and become a giver?
Fourthly, legacy-building ushers in God’s favor, which is always aligned with His purposes. Mark paraphrases Genesis 12:3––God’s promise to Abraham––with the words, ‘I will expand those who align with your life, and limit those who come against your life.’ Our responsibility is to ensure our lives are worth following. Whose life inspires you to follow? Why are you inspired to align your life with theirs?
Fifthly, your world is not limited to your own life experiences. Abraham wouldn’t have been able to fathom what it would look like for all the families of the earth to be blessed through him (Genesis 12:3). How might someone who receives, then stewards, then passes on a godly legacy create a ripple effect of blessing and abundant life? Have you witnessed or experienced this phenomenon in your community?
Take Away
For better or worse, we’re all custodians of moments that will go down in history. Let’s choose today to begin building a legacy that will stretch beyond our own small lives to bless generations to come, remembering that God goes ahead of us, He is with us, and He protects us from behind (Isaiah 52:12).
