April 21, 2022 Give Us Today Our Daily Bread

Aloha!  Hope you all had a fabulous Easter weekend celebrating the greatest reversal in human history................Jesus resurrecting from the dead!  After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples over a period of forty days and was taken up to the sky before their very eyes.  Suddenly, angels of the Lord said to the disciples that this same Jesus, who has been taken into heaven, will come back in the same way (Acts 1:1-11).  This is a historical fact, recorded and witnessed.  Hallelujah!

During his ministry on earth, Jesus taught his disciples to pray the Lord's Prayer.  We've covered some big topics, such as our Heavenly Father adopting us into His family and God's kingdom come.  This next phrase takes a dramatic turn as Jesus taught his disciples to pray for bread.  Yes, bread.  "Give us today our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11 NIV).  Let's watch the video Our Daily Bread to reflect on this prayer.

Discussion:

1. Is Jesus talking about groceries here?  If not, what does daily bread represent?

2. How does knowing that God is interested in our simple daily needs build our humility and confidence?

3. Jesus calls himself The Bread of Life in John 6:35.  Besides physical hunger, he can satisfy our emotional and relational hunger.  (a) What is an emotional void that Jesus can fill for you?  For example, are you feeling insecure in a major area of your life; do you often feel life is out of control; or do you feel that you have not achieved anything?  (b) Is there a relational craving that Jesus can restore for you? For example, do you feel that you are not getting enough attention from people close to you; or you are not feeling respected or needed.

4. What is our greatest spiritual need and how has God met it?  (See Romans 3:23, 6:23 and 5:8)

Take Away:

In Matthew 7:7-11 Jesus said, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" Good parents provide not only what their children need for physical life, but also for emotional, and relational needs.

God has already met our greatest spiritual need, that of forgiveness and restoration, through Christ. But He does not stop there. Jesus calls Himself the "Bread of Life" (John 6:35). "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind" (John 1:4). Jesus says He came to bring us abundant life (John 10:10). Not only are we saved for eternity, but we also experience a restored relationship with God now. We seek Him daily, and He renews us day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). The branch is continually nourished by the Vine (John 15:5).

March 17, 2022 Our Father...

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  Are you wearing green today to avoid being pinched by leprechauns and other fairy creatures?  Or do you cling onto Psalm 84:11 today and everyday? Last week, our homework was to pick a Scripture verse to memorize.  Would you like to share your verse with the group?   Today, our study is on the first phrase of The Lord's Prayer. " Our Father in heaven , hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." Matthew 6:9=13 For centuries, believers have memorized and used the Lord's prayer as a tool for going to God in prayer. It was given by Jesus in response to his disciple's request for a lesson in prayer. It continues to be a lesson for us as well. Here is today's video lesson  Our Father Questions for Reflection 1. Have you memorized ...
